Multimedia Minutes: Top Ten Tips from an MMJ Anchor
Work on tomorrow’s story today is one of the top ten tips from multimedia anchor Marc Schollett of TV7-4/Traverse City, Michigan where he anchors three newscasts a day:
TOP FIVE DO’S
1.) Plan ahead. Be working on tomorrow’s story today if you can. Spend a few minutes each day making phone calls for stories that are not going to be turned today. It provides a depth to your coverage that would be almost impossible to get in a “day of” piece. This can be a great strategy in dealing with agencies or people that are notorious for being slow in answering media responses. It makes it almost impossible for them to duck your questions, if you don’t give them a deadline they can just let pass.
2.) Use your tripod. Legs make things stable. You have two, a tripod has three. It wins every time. Shooting is slower with a tripod, but editing is so much faster.
3.) Spend a few minutes talking to your interviewee before you start and as you are leaving about anything other than either of your jobs or the story you are working on. You might be surprised this is how some of the best sources are developed. Talk about their motorcycle in the driveway, the deer head hanging on their wall, the kid’s pictures in the family room….anything. They will see you as a person, and not just the person on TV, and be far more likely to call you in the future. I can’t tell you how many people call me and say “you interviewed me about this, but I wanted to let you know about something completely different.”
4.) When time is tight, keep it simple and clean….and get it done.
5.) Be excited about your stories. Most of us can watch a story and tell right away if the VJ was excited to do it. How? If they are excited, its well thought out, thorough, creative, and has certain energy. If you are not excited for your stories, find new stories. These days you may be able to have more say in what stories you are doing. It doesn’t mean you will get to do fluff, but enterprise some stories and turn them well, and your news director may give you a little more freedom when it comes to story selection.
If they know you are going to turn a thorough, energetic story that connects with viewers they are more likely to let you do it, even if it falls outside the “normal” stories your station runs.
TOP FIVE DON’TS
1.) Don’t think of you video as an afterthought. Good video might save a story, but poorly shot wallpaper video will certainly ruin one.
2.) Don’t complain about carrying gear. There are hundreds of darn good reporters out there who are carrying resumes right now who would kill to be carrying gear.
3.) Don’t forget what it’s like to be a viewer. See each day’s story as if you were watching it from home. Did you get the take home message across? Did you like video? Did it all make sense? Would you want to watch it again? Would you need too?
4.) Don’t rush the writing. That’s where real mistakes are made.
5.) Don’t use being a one man band as a crutch or an excuse. It’s the wave of the future and a great skill to have.

Hi All,
I am a newbie. I would be grateful for any advice on how to copy the video recordings from my scratched DVD. This is my only copy of the videos as I have lost the original Hi8 tapes.
My questions are:
1) Are there any reliable freeware programs which can copy the video recordings to the hard disk on my notebook computer? (If necessary, I am prepare to lose a few picture frames in order to preserve the integrity of the overall video recordings.)
2) Any other suggestion on how to recover the video recordings will be much appreciated.
I am able to watch the video recordings on the scratched DVD with our Philips DVD player connected to the TV. But I am unable to copy an ISO image of the DVD using Imgburn on my notebook computer (Windows Vista). The image copying stopped at 32% after 20 attempts and threw up an error message.
I have attempted to play the DVD on my Notebook computer using VideoLAN’s VLC media player and then copy the videos to the hard-disk. But the play-back stopped after about 20 minutes and the program reverted to the standby condition.
I have also tried using another laptop with a different CD disk drive to replicate the DVD without much success.
I have washed the DVD with soap and water without much joy. At this stage, I am reluctant to use the “tooth paste as polish method” as I understand that this method could irreversibly damage the disk.
I have also searched the Afterdawn forum for inspiration. It would appear that most of the relevant discussions are several years old and mainly on software programs which have since been discontinued.
My last resort would be to capture the composite signal output from the Philip DVD player and then reconvert the analogue recordings to a digital format. Apart from the inevitable signal degradation, it would be tedious work as well since I have over 6.5 hours of video recordings on the scratched DVD.
Your advice will be much appreciated.

Hi All,
I’ve done a seach on here but couldn’t fine exactly what I need. If I’ve overlooked a related thread sorry.
So, my problem is that when transferring data from my digital cam to my computer an error occured which resulted in the connection being disrupted and the format of lots of my files got messed up. I still had the exact same volume of data on the SD card but somehow hundreds of single video and photo files got bundled into about 5 large files of an unknown format that I couln’t open. I had over 600 files 200 were successfully transferred and remained unchanged on my SD card. The other 400 were bundled into the larger files.
The problem was because my computer had problems reading video files directly from the camera. I now use a USB card reader for the SD card and I don’t experience the problem anymore.
I managed to rescue all my photo files using EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional 4.3.6. I could open these no problem and also the first fame of my video files. This software also managed to extract all my video files which are in the .MOV format.
The problem is that it extracted each .MOV file in two parts. I can’t get any program to play these files properly.
The first part is more than 99% of the file and the second part is only a few KB. For example the first two recovered files are called File001.mov and File002.mov. The 1st one is 43,320Kb and the 2nd one is 4KB. From looking at the files which transferred OK the very first movie file I recorded onto the SD card has a size of 43,3204Kb, which is exactly the size of the two first recoverd files. Which indicates that these two files joined together would make a complete file.
When I try open the larger file it is not recognised by Quicktime or Realplayer. When I open the small file it plays but with a blank screen and no sound. Although this file is only a few Kb it still plays for the original length of the video.
I’ve tried merging and converting these files which various softwares but always get an error.
Does anyone have an idea how I can get them to work or can you recommend another software/method for extracting/rescuing the files from the SD card?
I have Windows XP, an 8GB Transcend SD card and the camera is a Panasonic FZ28.
