Multimedia Minutes: Video Sequencing Tips Thanks to George Clooney

Friday, December 4th, 2009

You can learn a lot about shooting and editing sequences by watching movie trailers — like this one featuring George Clooney for his new movie, “Up in the Air.”

 .

If you’re interested in knowing more about what the movie’s director said about the sequence, as I was, check out this interactive link:

That’s it for George Clooney and sequencing for now, but you’ll still learn a lot by checking out the Learning Videos on the right.

We welcome visitors from European multimedia journalist Adam Westbrook’s site, http://adamwestbrook.wordpress.com/, which recognizes our blog in “Best of the Blogs 2009.”

He writes “Bob Kaplitz’s blog is a must for anyone trying to get to grips with the basics of video journalism. He’s done what no-one’s really thought to do up until now – use video to teach video journalism. Clever, huh?”

Multimedia Minutes: Clever Production Effects for Stand-Up

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Enjoy a cleverly produced stand-up, which begins at – 1:07 in this story by KEPR-TV’s anchor-reporter Molly Kelleher.

———————————————————

How did Molly do it?  Here’s her response:

Bob,

I am glad you liked my standup. Here’s how I did it…

Out in the field, I filmed myself with a wide enough shot that I knew I could fit 8 of me in the screen. Then I said my standup 8 different times in 8 different positions. And I made sure nothing was in my background like traffic that would be different.

Then in the edit bay (final cut pro), I started with position one and layered each new spot on top with everything cropped out but myself. So the only un-cropped version was the very first one and everything else just popped up on top of that because I layered it on top of it. I hope that makes sense. I did a lot of playing with it in the edit bay, but it was fun to do.

Of course, you can’t turn a story like this in a day or two, but you can begin calling to get the facts.  Viewers appreciate your watching out where their taxpayer money goes.
