• Beauty of a Two-Shot

    October 30th, 2010

In this story by KSNV’s (Las Vegas) ”Anchor Mom,” you can hear Sue’s question.  She asked a principal why violence rates were highest in the area at his school.

Viewers are concerned about the safety of their kids, so the issue is highly relevant in every market.  And viewers value reporters who ask the questions they’d ask.

Questions pull viewers in.  But many reporters cut out their questions and fail to capture a two-shot like this.

Sue did work with a photographer, but you can do this as a multimedia journalist with a tripod.

    1. Since you know where you’ll set, set up your camera to capture the two-shot.
    2. Roll long enough to get video of your subject listening.
    3. You can use this shot for your actual interview questions.
    4. Reset the camera to a one shot for your interview.

This approach takes a little more work, but will set your work apart from others in a great way.
