Fanastic Source Under Your Nose
November 3rd, 2010
You can get information from unexpected places.
I discovered this by chance. I wasn’t able to get to see a few sources I hoped to. I asked the janitor, who was sweeping up near me, where a person’s office was. He told me, but he also volunteered information that led to several exclusive stories.
How is that possible? Simple. The janitor knows. People talk freely in offices. The janitor is invisible to many of them. “He (or she) won’t understand,” they think.
It’s not wise to make generalizations from just a few experiences, but when you’re out covering stories, don’t write off what may seem like the “little people.” Many know alot, keep it to themselves — until someone treats them with the respect they deserve.
A janitor at a TV station in Los Angeles and I struck up a conversation years ago. He had been there more than a couple of decades, and happy about the job security. Happy about the job security? “I’ve been here through five general managers,” he informed me, then continued to empty the trash.
