• Quick Tips for Sweeps

Identify each story with a strong viewer benefit sentence.

As simple as it seems, it immediately separates the stories focused on viewer benefit for the vast majority of viewers from those sentences that are “mushy,” needing help.  For example, a strong line:  “We reveal the three neighborhoods with the highest rates of home break-ins in the last months — and new ways to stay safe.”

    Questions

    • Likely to interest the vast majority of people?  Sure.  If it doesn’t affect a lot of people, the rest of the questions don’t matter.
    • Focused?  Sure.  One angle.
    • Strong visual opportunities?  Sure, the neighborhood.
    • Strong sound possibilities?   Sure, with victims.

Keep this list handy because it’s useful as goals for all your stories.
