Remarkable Power of Images + Sound
February 17th, 2011
Getting beyond the officials to the people affected sounds is a recommendation you’ve likely heard. But this example brings the point home in a big way. Big way.
Be prepared, this is a sad, alarming story — but you’ll also find it an eye-opening learning opportunity because of the power of still images and sound.

Great Storytelling Can Take the Pain Away from Your Neck and Back
February 4th, 2011
“Why did they show me that?” is a frequent viewer complaint in focus groups.
This viewer was referring to multiple angles of a building in connection with a story about an agency in the building. The MMJ shot the building from all angles, working hard for “cover video.” Of course, unless you’re the architect for the building or the property owner, you don’t care. It’s boring no matter how hard the multimedia journalist worked.
So what’s the solution? Consider yourself the best video. Watch the power of storytelling from — of all people — a chiropractor who placed several videos on YouTube. I edited out the demonstrations so you could see just the doctor tell his story.

Don’t Miss the Big Shot
February 3rd, 2011
Ferrari 458 Italia crash run over by Ford F 150 Truck PARKED ON ITS HOOD!-The three quarters of million YouTube hits shows the viral impact of the video of the Brandon, Florida accident. Of course, you rarely catch something this engaging. It does raise the question: ”If something like this happened in front of you, how ready would you be?”-In this case, it took awhile to pull the cars apart — but what about some of those dramatic shots of cars spinning causing chain reaction crashes on ice. You either get that shot or you miss it.-So what about something completely unexpected?-It would be great if your camera is always ready to shoot, but that’s not practical. So be sure you’re ready with either your video equipped phone or — even better — a Flip type camera which can shoot high definition video. For some multimedia journalists, they do it out of instinct. They grab and shoot, so they don’t miss the shot. But “Be ready to shoot” should serve as a reminder for all of us.-By the way, the Ferrari retails for $225,000 in case you’re in the market.
