• Whom are You Talking To?

    October 30th, 2010

Picture a crowd like this, and it’s hard to tell whom you’re talking to.

That’s why some stations identify a “target viewer” they’re trying to reach.  Often it’s what’s called a “key demo,” which sales finds important.  It might be a wife with two school-age kids, for example.

They’ll even give that person a name, so they’ll ask “Why will Sara care?”

It’s a simple approach which helps you consider that person in your story selection and writing.  Of course, it’s best to widen the appeal of your story as much as possible, but this is a helpful tool.

If you’re not sure, ask your news manager.  They’ll be impressed you asked, and you’ll have a better idea whom you’re talking to.
